CREST Awards now free for all young people in Scotland

20 August 2025 – The British Science Association (BSA) is delighted to announce that, from August 2025, its flagship programme for science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) education, CREST Awards, will be completely free to apply for all young people aged 3–19 in Scotland.
This has been made possible thanks to the generous support from the James Weir Foundation.
CREST Awards, a nationally recognised STEM education programme celebrating student-led STEM project work, empower young people to explore STEM through flexible, hands-on projects, gaining recognition, skills, and a passion for discovery.
CREST Awards have six levels for young people aged 3 to 19 of all abilities. CREST Awards activities are low cost and easy to run. The programme offers more than just recognition – it provides a transformative learning experience. Through hands-on, student-led projects, young people develop critical thinking, problem-solving, and teamwork skills that enhance their learning across the curriculum.
While CREST education resources remain free to access for everyone in the UK, this funding will enable teachers and educators in any Scottish schools and education institutions or parents and home educators to apply for CREST certificates on behalf of young people aged 3-19 at no cost. Older students can also apply independently for free.
Maria Rossini, Head of Education, British Science Association, said:
We’re thrilled to remove the cost barrier for students and educators across Scotland. This generous contribution from the James Weir Foundation means that more young people are now able to access STEM education in a hands-on way — regardless of their background or ability. We understand that the financial barrier can be a major challenge for many schools. This funding will make a substantial difference to many schools across Scotland by removing this barrier and championing equal access to science education.
