You can use these projects to enter the Youth Grand Challenges competition. This resource includes three project ideas on the theme of protection and prevention from infectious diseases. This resource has been produced by 4Science, in partnership with the CREST Awards scheme.
‘On the Lookout’ is a research project: Students are challenged to think about how useful it would be to have maps of the locations of disease-carrying mosquitoes, how diseases such as malaria are diagnosed and why people and animals are quarantined.
‘Active Ingredients’ is a practical project: Students are challenged to think about the advantages and disadvantages of ‘natural’ versus ‘synthetic’ mosquito repellents, how the active ingredients can be extracted from a natural product and how to test different formulations containing the same active ingredient.
‘Know your Enemy’ is a communication project: Students are challenged to think about how mosquitoes spread infectious diseases, if all mosquitoes spread infectious diseases, why mosquitoes bite people, what attracts mosquitoes to people and if they attracted to some people more than others.
